What is it like to teach at Seven Generations?
While I'm just starting at Seven Generations, all indications point to an ideal environment where teachers can engage students in what matters and education can revitalize the minds of the entire community. I'm thrilled to join the staff.

Cara Owens

A Seven Generations founding member, Cara Owens has Bachelor degrees from the Pennsylvania State University in psychology and rehabilitation services education, and a Master of Science degree in environmental science, with a focus in conservation biology, from Antioch University New England. She worked for many years as a case manager and advocate for people with disabilities, and served on Human Rights Committees, before embarking on her environmental teaching ventures. Prior to joining our staff in 2009, she was an adjunct professor, sustainability coordinator, and research project manager at Muhlenberg College, and a naturalist teacher at Pool Wildlife Sanctuary. Some of her past projects include: mapping forest communities; creating a regional tree field guide; assisting with a bird banding station; using and teaching Geographic Information Systems technology; assisting with a solar photovoltaic installation; wildlife rehabilitation work, and a variety of waste reduction, recycling, and composting projects.

Cara has been lucky to live in a variety of beautiful locations in Pennsylvania, Colorado, and New Hampshire over the years, and enjoys exploring our beautiful Lehigh Valley plants, wildlife, and geology with her students. She, her husband of 9 years, three children and 2 basenjis live in Bethlehem, but they love visiting New Hampshire where they used to live. They enjoy gardening, biking, hiking, birding and camping with the dogs. On her own time, Cara knits, sews toys for her children and niece, and reads and bakes whenever she can find the time.
